Cycle Ataxia 2015

What is it?

‘Cycle Ataxia’ is a Charity Cycle in aid of Ataxia Ireland and FARA Ireland.  The event will take place on Saturday, June 20th, 2015, from Ashbourne, County Meath.  The event is open to the public and all are welcome to participate.

What's it for?

Funds raised will primarily go towards research into finding a cure or treatment for Friedreich's Ataxia (a rare, degenerative neuro-muscular disorder which effects muscle coordination and body functions), as well as providing assistance for those living with a genetic ataxia.

What's involved?

There will be 3 cycle routes to choose from, with distances ranging from 13km to 100km.  The short 13km route will be a leisurely spin; suitable for most abilities.  If you feel like pushing yourself a bit harder, the next step up is the slightly tougher 38km.  Finally there is the 100km route; which involves some demanding climbs - recommended only for experienced cyclists, or those with a high level of fitness.  All routes will be aided by support & guidance vehicles, and the longer routes will feature designated rest stations.  The event is open only to people aged 16 or older.

The 38k & 100k routes will get underway at 9:30am.  The 13k route will start at 10:30am.  Please see Route Information further details.

What does it cost?

The entry fee to take part is €30 for all routes.  Entry fee includes a goodie bag and free Cycle Ataxia t-shirt (subject to registering by 12th June), a light breakfast, refreshments during the cycle, and a full lunch afterwards.  Sponsorship is not mandatory but we encourage all participants to try to raise what they can to support the cause.

How does it work?

Everybody who registers online will be given their own personal fundraising page where they can direct their friends & supporters to sponsor them and leave messages of support through the Facebook social media plugin.  Registrants can post information on their page including text, pictures and even videos.  They can set fundraising goals and visitors to the page can view the progress towards these goals.  Registrants will also have the option to create their own team, or join an already existing team.  Manual Sponsor Cards can also be downloaded here.

What if I don't want to cycle?

Anybody who does not wish to cycle, but would still like to raise funds can register as a 'non-cycling fundraiser'.  Just register for the cycle as a cyclist would but select 'non-cyclist' from the route list.  Registering as a non-cyclist is free of charge and fundraisers can create a team, or join an existing team, just as a cyclist would.

Non-Cycling Fundraisers who raise at least €30 on their fundraising page will receive a free 'limited-edition' Cycle Ataxia T-Shirt.
